The performers are accompanied by a fixed tape part that combines samples of multiple international poets reading their work in their native languages. When listening to speech in a language we understand\, our attention is so focused on deciphering the meaning of the speech\, that we are unable to focus deeply on the speech sounds. By juxtaposing and combining multiple different speech samples in different languages\, I hope to attune listeners to the beautiful\, complex sounds of speech\, and focus listeners’ attention towards a musical mode of listening to language. \nThis piece was originally composed in 2018 for three members of the MANA quartet\, and was significantly revised in 2020 for the full saxophone quartet.

DESCRIPTION:FRIDAY\, FEBRUARY 14\, 2020 — 8:00 PM\nTickets: $15 Suggested Donation\nTickets available at the door only\n\n \n\nComposer/pianist/scholar/activist John Halle\, the Mana Sax Quartet and Friction String Quartet perform two decades of Halle’s obliterations and reconfigurations of jazz standards by Monk\, Rodgers and others. \nActivist/pianist/scholar/composer John Halle began his musical career as a jazz musician in San Francisco in the early 1980s performing with Mark Levine\, Eddie Henderson\, Sonny Stitt and Freddy Hubbard among others. A founding member of the Common Sense Composers collective\, he recently retired from Bard and Yale where he taught many of the most performed composers of the millennial generation. This retrospective of Halle’s reflections\, critiques and deconstructions of jazz standards will feature the critically acclaimed Sphere(‘s) based on classic tunes by Thelonious Monk performed by the brilliant Friction Quartet. Halle will perform three solo piano works including Towerology (dedicated to composer Joan Tower)\, You Took Advantage of Me-an homage to the great jazz pianists Art Tatum and Stanley Cowell and the premiere of Street Music commissioned by the Mana Sax Quartet. Halle will be in attendance to perform–and discuss the works’ connection to the obliteration of standards of common decency\, intellectual honesty\, and moral authority which have been a conspicuous feature of the political culture of recent years.
